NO HIPPIE CHICKS
You know I like the music of the Dixie Chicks. I really, really don't care what their political views are either. After all, I don't look for political inspiration from three hillbilly girls from Texas with banjos on their knees. The music was good though with emphasis on the word "was".
Yes, the Chicks have come down with something even worse than bird flu. They have contracted "meaningful" disease. Rampant throughout Hollywood and the mass media, it afflicts the glitterati of today's pop culture by making the celebs feel that everything they say or do somehow bespeaks ultimate truth and knowledge. It then becomes their job to "enlighten" the rest of us slackers who listen to their music or see their movies. Symptoms include hugely swollen egos, persecution complex, and a really wicked rash of condescension for the "rabble" that merely consider the would be Gods as nothing more than "entertainers". How dare we do that!
The girls have begun their march to martyrdom by revealing their bleeding hearts on CBS 60 Minutes and by showing their feathers on the cover of Time magazine. I can't decide who is demeaned more in this whole charade? The entertainers themselves? The supposed "news" program? The purported "news" magazine? One thing is clear. They hold us, the general public, in the lowest disdain.
Take this quote from Martie Maguire of the Chicks as reported in the Chicago Tribune: "I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it . . . than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith." Oh darn, I guess Martie is going to think I'm not "cool". How will I live with myself because this dime a dozen songbird doesn't think I get "it". I bet Reba and Toby are just about as crushed as I am.
Like I said before, I don't begrudge anyone the right to express their opinions. But when the opinions they are expressing show a complete disdain for myself, my values, and my beliefs well why exactly would I spend any of my hard earned money on the product. You can get disrespect for free sisters. I sure as hell ain't gonna pay for it.
And as for the death threats, well, welcome to the world of George W Bush. You see Ms Maines, that's the kind of thing that comes when you decide, in your own words, "I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever." Everybody is owed respect Nats. You, the President, your fans. Because if you stop respecting other people, you can end up with some truly nasty consequences.
Now, you had better start making nice. Shut up and sing!
